ROUNDUP: Apple Headset Will Let You Pay With Your Eyes
Plus the secrets of Netflix's ad-supported tier and a product Google DID NOT kill.
The Information's sources say Apple's mixed reality headset will feature iris scanning and work similar to Face ID. It would let a user do things like authenticate payments and automatically switch users based on who is wearing it. The same sensors that track eyes for foveated rendering could be used for the iris scanning. Foveated rendering is when the headset only renders an image in high resolution for the part of the screen you're looking at. Engadget reminds us that Apple bought eye-tracking glasses maker SensoMotorics in 2017 and that Ming-Chi Kuo said this year that Apple is buying Primax's iris detection modules.l
The Information's sources also said the Apple headset will be made of mesh fabric, aluminum and glass and let you attach prescription lenses magnetically to the inside of the headset.
An Apple mixed reality headset is expected to launch sometime next year and is rumored to cost $2,000-$3,000.
